Middle Eastern music is far from monolithic but can often be characterised by its emphasis on monophonic and quarter-tonal melodies and complex rhythmic structures. Common instruments include the oud, qanun, and nay, and the music frequently incorporates improvisation. Because of these distinctive characteristics, it's been able to fuse with musical influence from other parts of the world without losing its inherent identity.
